A new stim....and it's a good one

Sorry for the lack of posting lately. Let's just say I hit a rough patch, but now I think I'm back.

So, what's new?....Sam has developed what *I think* is a new stim over the past few days.  Shrieking. Oh joy! She will shriek/scream (kind of like a large bird) over and over....the other night it was for about an hour. It's not a tantrum, it definitely seems to be more of a stim.  I think it's harmless, but it's pretty unnerving and annoying. Good thing she's cute, right?    ----------------------------->

Oh, and also, if you remember, Sam didn't start walking until after she turned 3....so her walking skills still aren't up to par with most kids her age. But she's definitely improving! So now she's starting to be able to turn circles while standing in the middle of the floor. It's an attempt at spinning.  No big deal right? Except that she wants to do it with her eyes closed......way to make me nervous!

It would be a lot less nerve wracking if she would just stick to spinning the toilet paper off the roll!

Edited to add a video of our wonderful new stim! (enjoy!)

Shrieking sounds super! I hate that toilet roll spinning thing. Nothing like respooling 10 yards of toilet paper 6 inches at a time

Oh my. Tommy's had so many verbal stims. Screaming fortunately have not been one of them. OMG as I type this, a commercial he doesnt like comes on and he makes this.. odd... how do i explain this.. its like he's making the SOUND of snow when its on tv (when a channel isn't working) That's the newest one. Irritating (to us) clicking in the back of his throat.. his stims change a lot. They'll leave, come back.. sometimes never come back. You never know with him. Tommy is a spinner though. Like you, I freak out because he CLOSES HIS EYES TOO!!! Not that i'd like it any better if his eyes were open because he's like a tank sometimes and will just take things OUT! I thought maybe if the eyes were closed, you got less dizzy. We tried it.. and you don't get less dizzy, but it IS a different feeling within your body. Yes we actually DO these things.. to try to FEEL what he feels..to maybe understand why he does them. Try it.. its very interesting. I HAVE/WANT to know why he does this stuff. I want to understand his emotions the best way I can. I love when he's excited. He'll do this hand flappy thing up and down my arms. Yesterday when we saw ourselves on TV, I was so excited, I went over to him and did the hand flappy thing to him up and down HIS arms telling him how excited i was. He joined in. Made my heart melt. Like, we CONNECTED for that 5 seconds of interaction.

That picture is the most precious picture. You capture some really great shots of her! She is absolutely adorable! <3 (hope the shreeking disappears. Hopefully she's just experimenting with her vocal abilities)

She is super cute! And I can relate. My boy likes screaming/screeching/making noise of any kind!

Teresa...thank you!

Jim...I've given up on the toilet paper. I just leave the tube on now, so she can spin away.

Rhonda....that's so wonderful about the connection with Tommy yesterday! Yeah, I want to understand how Sam is feeling too. Sometimes her stims are cute or funny. But this one...not so much.

Oh yeah, def a verbal stim. For some reason, K has always been bigger with the verbal stims than anything else, so we know it well.

oh, we've got the toilet paper thing going on here. she unravels the whole thing, then dumps it all in the toilet. It's not very awesome.
